ECOWAS Parliament tackles Nigerians’ problems in Ghana


The Speaker of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, verbalized on Wednesday that the quandaries confronting Nigerian businessmen in Ghana were receiving adequate attention.

He verbalized the sub-regional parliament would perpetuate to deploy the instrument of parliamentary diplomacy to address the challenges facing the Nigerian business community in the country.

Ekweremadu gave the assurance in Abuja when he received the incipient justices of the ECOWAS Court of Equity, led by its President, Equity Maria Do Ceu Monteiro Silva.

The team, according to the Special Adviser to the Speaker, Mr. Uche Anichukwu,   was on a familiarisation tour to the parliament in Abuja.

Ekweremadu expounded that past interventions by the ECOWAS Parliament were auxiliary in resolving issues relating to the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Act.

He expressed the hope that such matters would not get to the caliber of judicial pronouncements.

He verbalized, “As a Parliament, we have had cause to intervene at certain times on this matter and I am ecstatic to stress that the regime of Ghana has always responded positively to these interventions and the matters were resolved.

“We do not optate a situation where certain things that have to do with the liberation of kineticism and liberation of establishment of citizens of member states, will now go to the Community Court of Equity with two member-states contending. That will not be good for our relationship.”

He, however, stressed that the parliament would perpetuate to collaborate with the Community Court of Equity to deepen democracy in the sub-region.

He additionally pledged that the body would perpetuate to ascertain compliance by member states with the verdicts of the court as a platform for the peoples of the sub-region who feel inequitably treated to seek redress.

Silva had earlier emphasised the desideratum for the parliament and the Community Court of Equity to perpetuate to collaborate to promote the interest of the ECOWAS citizens.

She pledged the fortification of the court to the quest for the enhancement of the potencies of the ECOWAS Parliament, noting that it was vital for the integration process and development of the sub-region.
